Abu Dhabi, UAE – The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, announced on Thursday the passing of his brother, Sheikh Saied bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Representative of the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, according to the Emirates News Agency “WAM.”
In a statement issued by the UAE Presidency, an official mourning period of three days has been declared, and the national flags will be flown at half-mast from Thursday until the end of Saturday.
It was reported on Saturday by the UAE Presidency that Sheikh Saied bin Zayed Al Nahyan was “experiencing a health condition,” without providing further details.
Sheikh Saied bin Zayed Al Nahyan, born in Al Ain in 1965, was the sixth son of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the nation. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of the Emirates in 1988.
Upon graduation, Sheikh Saied was appointed as a Deputy Director of Planning in Abu Dhabi and a member of the Executive Council. He served as the Chairman of the Maritime Ports Authority for a period from 1991 to 1996 and was a member of the Abu Dhabi Development Council.
Throughout his life, Sheikh Saied represented his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in numerous official international visits. He was known for his love of sports, particularly football, and played a significant role in its development within the country. Additionally, he had a passion for hunting and swimming.
He also served as the President of the UAE Football Association during the 2002-2003 period. Furthermore, Sheikh Saied had a keen interest in the arts and had extensive knowledge of architectural designs and urban development worldwide. He contributed to significant development projects in the UAE.
The nation mourns the loss of a respected figure whose contributions to various aspects of UAE society will be remembered and celebrated. As the country observes the official mourning period, the legacy of Sheikh Saied bin Zayed Al Nahyan will live on, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps of dedication and service to the nation.
